Last week I was incredibly honored to be featured on The Stylish Planner, feeling like I am a.) an amazing planner and b.) stylish, it seems only fitting that I share this write up about yours truly and in the spirit of sharing also share with you a few snapshots of my closet. While it may not be the prettiest walk in you've ever seen it's highly organized and designed each season by a feature pattern. A feature pattern is a pattern I've fallen in love. This year I fell in love with a leopard pattern and have it in the shirt, scarf, and skirt! My closet is kept neat and fresh by only allowing the things I truly love and wear to be in the space.

If you are a wedding and event professional other than a planner, please describe your product or service.  We are an event planning firm in love with all things vintage that focuses on planning, design, and vintage place settings.       

How would you describe your personal style?  Casual and elegant with fun and playful layers. My wardrobe and personal style are always ever changing and I’m inspired by a myriad of colors, the warmth of summer, cool of winter, and crispness of the fall and spring.       

What is your “go-to” meeting attire?  A tailored blazer paired with a shirt with a lovely pattern and skinny jeans paired with adorable flats. When appropriate I love to pair this with a fun scarf.       

What is your “go-to” evening industry event attire? (i.e., associational meeting, vendor or venue open house, etc.)  I love a great black cocktail dress! My personal favorite Shoshanna, Rachel Roy, or Mark and James by Badgley Mischika.       

What is your attire for wedding/event day set-up?  Black Tights and ruffled top paired with my favorite Ann Taylor flats.       

What is your attire for actual wedding/event?  A black dress, with Kitten heels!       

What style and brand of shoes do you wear on wedding/event days?  Ann Taylor flats (Set up) and Ann Taylor Kitten heels (actual event).       

Tell us about your favorite jeans and why you love them.     I have a great pair of skinny jeans from The Gap that I LOVE, they have just the right amount of give in them and they are so versatile and can be worn with a blazer, scarf, flats or even heels.       

Who is your favorite celebrity style icon and why?  Sanaa Lathan, this girl KNOWS how to wear a dress, but can easily glam up a simple pair of jeans with a fluttery top and a gorgeous accessory.       

Please share with us (in 50 words or less) your favorite style tip:  Keep it simple! Your wardrobe is filled with every day pieces that can easily translate into making your wardrobe fabulous. Think jewelry, scarves, and shoes. You can make a skirt, jeans, or legging look like a million bucks paired with the right accessory.       

What would you like people to know about you that they may not discover just by viewing your website or blog?  When I was really little I was convinced that I wanted to be a Chef.  My sister and I would play cooking show with our pretend Julia Child voices for hours…we secretly still play cooking show when I’m home except now we really cook!  Oh yes and of course we still use our “Julia” voice-ha!  Ok so maybe I use my “Julia” voice every time I cook!       

What is your most treasured possession?  Old family photos of the women in my family that go back 3 generations. The women in my family all had a strong entrepreneurial spirit, seeing them is a reminder to me of the woman I’d like to become.       

What message would you like to convey to others in our industry?  Don’t be afraid to do something different! We’re in an industry that demands creativity and out of the box thinking.

Sneak Peak: Sarah and Scott's Wedding

Last weekend I was honored to travel back to my hometown of Havre De Grace Maryland for a wedding. The Steppingstone Museum set the stage for what I can only describe as a magical place; one that I had proclaimed would be the setting for my wedding when I was 5. It was exactly as I had remembered in my mind...rolling hills, herb gardens, stone walls, and views that even I can't describe.

Sweet tea, cakes, cookies, pies, and a make your own snow cone machine oh my! This indeed was a southern wedding filled with all the charm and fixings! The love that these two expressed throughout the day is telling that they're going to have a long happy life together! Congrats to Sarah and Scott!!!

Inspirational Photo-Shoot

A few months ago we had the absolute pleasure of designing a style dictionary inspirational shoot. Our theme...Vintage Eclectic.

The details really make this table work, and while they’re simple I think they really make a powerful statement. Hints of lace, satin, a mish-mash of patterns, fabrics, frames and the hardware gave the table an unexpected elegance and help to pull together a look that any bride could duplicate. A huge thank you to both Katherine and Craig from Henry and Masci for bringing the pictures to life and Jen from Blush printables for her lovely invitation suite!

Date night

In the thick of wedding planning, it is difficult to focus on what brought you to this moment: your significant other. I know that for me, there were moments when I would inundate Noah with new wedding ideas that popped into my head and quickly email him. A couple of hours later, I would pepper Noah with a photo that I snapped with my cell phone that is wedding worthy. A couple of days later, a new earth shattering suggestion were sent to Noah via text. Who gets excited super pumped about how the light reflects off of one of the chandeliers at our wedding venue and wants to share it with her fiancé? Me! Poor Noah was a doll throughout my wedding-craze-excitement phase.

So.. what am I getting to here? It is ok to enjoy wedding planning. Don’t let the stress overwhelm you! Not every conversation you have with your fiancé has to directly relate to the big day. For the sake of your relationship, keep it cool from time to time. Be willing to take a step back from your wedding planning craze and return to the basics, each other! As a result, we instituted date night, where we simply enjoy the presence of each other, de-stress, go out, have a drink, cook a meal together, watch a movie, take the dog for a walk around the neighborhood. Do anything that will take your mind off of wedding planning.

Last night we enjoyed a date night at a Spanish Wine class. It was fun to get out of my element, be silly, drink wines and learn about different kinds of grapes and most importantly how to differentiate a glass of fruity versus sugary wines.

Date night has been such a blessing!

Vision and Venue

When Noah proposed to me I didn’t know where to start. Instead of planning anything, I spent a solid 2 months of staring at the ring and showing it off to friends and family. Sure, every little girl has some idea of the big day. They grow up playing wedding. Find boa scarves, absurdly large hats, apply red lipstick and awkwardly walk around in high heels to the tune of a wedding march. Me, I had a nose in a Nancy Drew book and played school. For my wedding, I was hoping to just go with the flow and treat it as if it were any other event. WRONG!!! Secretly, I was overwhelmed. Every little thing I saw was a potential wedding idea. Pretty colors. Textured fabric. Vintage looking centerpiece frames. Christmas/twinkle lights in all shapes and forms. PHOTOBOOTHS. At some point, an entire magazine was labeled with post it’s, courtesy of Brides.com. All things shiny and pretty on a blog were bookmarked. Enough was enough. I was losing steam.

A phone call to Pheebs was desperately needed. “Create an inspiration board. Find items you love and create a wedding book and create your vision. Collect items that allows you to imagine your wedding” --- Wise words a la Pheebs. Thus began a more focused plan. Noah’s laptop, pinterest (pinterest.com) and I were best friends for several months. I ruthlessly abandoned all of my previous bookmarks and post its. My current inspiration boards are still heavily filled with pretty items, but aesthetic style and decisions became very clear. I wanted a space with grounds. I wanted one location to have the ceremony and reception. I wanted a place that reflected our relationship. Candles, flowers, branches, greens, chocolate and chandeliers were consistent inspiration board contenders. It was obvious that I needed a cohesive look that could potentially allow these random ideas coexist. In a couple more months’ time, I not only realized that not all items that I love will be reflected in our wedding, I found my venue.

Until we reached a venue decision, there were many “misses” that led to signing on the dotted line. A cozy rooftop hotel in NYC was our first stop. The hotel was eclectic. The tapestries provided character. The colors were bold. The staff was incredibly helpful. The delicious and conveniently located hotel restaurant. A exclusive hotel only garden location for engagement photos. Unfortunately, the hotel was quickly dropped due to high, on and off season pricing and restriction with capacity.  Another miss was a landmark estate outside of NYC that had the makings of a beautiful site. The estate was tucked away in a quaint little town. If you weren’t looking for this site, you could easily miss it. As a matter of fact, I missed the turn onto the estate. This venue offered a planner and caterer, built into their pricing. The planner and I got along marvelously. We had a simpatico when it came to likes and dislikes. It was closer to having a water view and backdrop in our photos. Yet again, the venue was a bust. The last venue on our list was an estate museum. We didn’t get very far with the estate museum mainly because well… it was just awfully managed and disorganized. We took this as a sign and moved on.

Ultimately, our venue decision was lush with green, well maintained country club. After all of that, a country club? Yes, folks. New York Country Club fit all of our needs. The catering manager was a dear to work with and the space on its own was a star. In a snapshot, the ceremony and cocktail hour could be a dual indoor or outdoor event as it was enclosed with glass doors. The backsplash was a beautiful, green golf course. The drive up to the country club felt regal. The reception hall offered high ceilings with chandeliers, exposed stone walls, a grand piano and enough room to seat our maximum guest list. It was a no brainer. New York Country Club is our venue and we quickly made the arrangements to negotiate and sign contracts. Both Noah and I love our venue very much and have more say in the vendors we prefer to use, formality, and cost. We didn’t break the bank!

If I could impart any nuggets of wisdom, it would be that finding your venue should be based on your own personal needs, instead of going with the hype of a locale. Finding a venue will take some trial and error, so allot enough time before rushing into a decision.

5 easy ways to stay stress free while planning your wedding...

It’s April 28th and we are in full wedding season! For all of the wedding planners at Making ME we’re all excited and eager for our first wedding of the season in a couple of weeks. The final weeks before your wedding can be best described as make it or break it when it comes to all the long months of planning. Collectively along with your fiancé, bridal entourage, and family you’ve spent over 500 hours obsessing, planning, and designing your wedding. This is one of the most important days of your life and to keep you from having a bridal meltdown on your big day. We’ve come up with our 5 most helpful tips one month before your wedding day.


1.) Stop Planning- I know this seems silly for wedding planners to tell you to stop planning, but really STOP PLANNING! Take a night to go out with your fiancé and do anything except plan your wedding, keep in mind that this day is about the two of you celebrating your love.

2.) Hire a Wedding Planner-Yes I said it! If 30 days before you’re wedding you’re really feeling the stress of everything and having “wedding terrors”, hire a day of coordinator to assist you with the final weeks of planning…they don’t call us lifesavers for nothing hunny!

3.) Enlist your girlfriends- This is one of my favorite tips because it really allows your girlfriends to take part in some different aspects of your wedding. Try and think of things that you are not having your Day of Coordinator in charge of and enlist away…trust me they won’t be offended!

4.) Exercise- Ok we had to throw this in simply because it’s something that you can do that will not only work as a de-stressor but you’re going to see fantastic results.

5.) Grab a Massage- This is just another way for you to take a step away from the planning of your wedding and to start focusing on the other amazing things that are going to happen in your life. If you’d like to add a little spice invite your fiancé and enjoy a couples massage too.

Proposal Story

The story of us begins with a series of missed connections. We studied at a small liberal arts college and graduated one year apart. For part of our college career, we even shared a small group of mutual friends and acquaintances. A majority of our on-campus work experiences is in the same building with the same people. Yet, our paths never crossed until after college. Fast forwarding a couple of years, Noah and I met at a work event and several months later, we began dating long distance after a fateful phone conversation. 

A year and half later and a move back home to NYC, Noah decides to propose. His mother, a safe deposit box and an heirloom ring were part of the plan. The unsuspecting fiancée to be (that’s me) had no idea what was going on. The night before the proposal, dinner was at our first “date,” Bella Sguardo. We sprang for the Emack’s ice cream we were supposed to have when we first met at Ramaz Upper Day School. Still, I had no idea.

It was August 28^th, 2010, a summery yet nice day outside. Noah was sick with a fever the night before. I tossed and turned in bed mainly from the heat wave that nearly canceled our plans for the day: picnic and check out the Cloisters. After some serious prodding from Noah and a slow start to the day, we drove to the farmers market, filled the cooler with delicious cheeses, fruits and kale (we love fresh kale). Our destination was Fort Tyron Park in the Cloisters. Our picnic was short but a great reprieve. In that moment, where life couldn’t get any calmer, the sun couldn’t shine any brighter and our dog couldn’t be any happier, Noah asked me a series of silly questions. Still, the unsuspecting bride to be has no idea what is going on.

Noah: Would you give me a serious answer to a serious question?

Lia: Depends on the question.

Noah: (leans over to me) Will you Marry me?

Lia: ……….?

Noah:… okayyyy…. Not the reaction I was expecting…

Lia: Are you serious?

Noah:….

Lia: Are you kidding?

Noah:…..

Lia: Are you serious?

Noah: (puts away the ring……)

I must have looked like a starry eyed idiot. Instead of responding to the question at hand, I asked Noah if he was serious and some other variation of that question, a half dozen times. Noah was indeed serious. After a couple of awkward, teary eyed, quiet, touch and go moments, I answered yes and asked to see the ring again.

Picture? yes!! 

And there you have it folks, the story of our proposal and what brought on this entire wedding organization and mania. In hindsight, I am truly oblivious because the signs were ALL THERE!!!

Engagement Chicken….say what say huh?!

Falling off your seat already? Well I did too when just a week ago a friend was telling me all about the secret engagement chicken recipe. Call it superstition, call it lucky but whatever you do don’t call it crazy until you’ve tried this on your future hubby. Now I myself (as many of you may know) am not married (please refrain from the ooos and aaaahs lol) but am absolutely smitten with a man I’ve been dating for nearly 3 years.

Ok friends I don’t plan on pulling a chicken, for this gal it’s just good old fashioned waiting (yes ma’am disclaimer successfully inserted..ha!). BUT when is it time to pull a chicken, I mean make the engagement chicken? As a wedding planner I've heard it all and now I've heard even more about how women are gently nudging their future hubbs into engagement season!

Engagement Chicken
Serves 2 to 4

Ingredients:
1 whole chicken (approximately 4 pounds)

1/2 cup fresh lemon juice, plus 3 whole lemons—including 1 sliced for garnish

1 tablespoon kosher or coarse sea salt

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper

Fresh herbs for garnish (4 rosemary sprigs, 4 sage sprigs, 8 thyme sprigs, and 1 bunch flat-leaf parsley)                                                                                                                                                          

1. Position an oven rack in the upper third of the oven and preheat the oven to 400°F. Remove the giblets from the chicken, wash the chicken inside and out with cold water, then let the chicken drain, cavity down, in a colander for 2 minutes.

2. Pat the chicken dry with paper towels. Place the chicken breast-side down in a medium roasting pan fi tted with a rack and pour the lemon juice all over the chicken, both inside and out. Season the chicken all over with salt and pepper inside and out.

3. Prick 2 whole lemons three times each in three different places with a fork and place them deep inside the cavity. Chicken cavity size may vary, so if one lemon is partly sticking out, that’s fine. (Tip: If the lemons are stiff, roll them on the countertop with your palm before pricking to get the juices flowing.)

4. Put the chicken in the oven, lower the oven temperature to 350°F, and roast, uncovered, for 15 minutes.

5. Remove the roasting pan from the oven. Using tongs or two wooden spoons, turn the chicken breast- side up. Insert a meat thermometer in the thigh, and return the chicken to the oven and roast for about 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes or until the meat thermometer reads 180°F and the juices run clear when the thigh is pricked with a fork. Continue roasting if necessary. Keep in mind that cooking times in different ovens vary; roasting a chicken at 350°F takes approximately 18-20 minutes per pound, plus an additional 15 minutes.

6. Let the chicken rest for 10 minutes before carving. And here’s the secret: Pour the juices from the roasting pan on top of the sliced chicken— this is the “marry me juice.” Garnish with fresh herbs and lemon slices.

Dear Lovely Readers and Brides-to-be,

My name is Lia and I am your newly minted social media guru. What this means is that I will share the love, joy and challenges behind my wedding process and planning with Making ME Event Planning Firm.

This whirlwind journey began last summer when my then boyfriend, now fiancé, asked me to marry him in the sweetest and thoughtful of proposals. (Not that I have anything else to compare it to……) Bubbling with excitement, I called my friend and wedding planner, Pheebs, to giggle and live in the moment. Over the course of the next few months, I cherished my engagement heirloom ring, scoped out every single wedding blog and magazine, all the while bouncing off ideas with Pheebs.

One of the most important pieces of advice that Pheebs gave to me was to compile inspiration boards. Surprisingly, a majority of my wedding vision was drawn from the day to day life that my fiancé and I share as a couple. The way the sunlight warms up our apartment and feeds our plants in the mornings inspires me to capture the warmth as part of our wedding. Sharing an impromptu work related wine tasting with my fiancé inspires me to integrate his love of wine. It was the simple things that moved my heart and instantly jumped into my inspiration boards. Still, my main source of inspiration is the joining of our lives, as one big happy family.

Wedding Reality??

Ok so we all know that I'm a reality TV junkie...oh wait you didn't? I confess I'm a reality TV junkie and combine that with anything wedding and I'm IN!

I just stumbled upon a show called Wedding Wars and I couldn't turn the channel, now I've seen shows about competing to win the blah-blah-blah of a lifetime but geez! This show is like a combination of survivor and all things weddings and it's crazy.  The prize? $25,000 towards your dream wedding, so what will you do for your dream wedding?

Sick dayz

Argh! Today I woke up with an awful feeling all over (head, joints, neck, throat)....today was going to be a sick day! So what did I do on my sick day? Aside from medicating myself every 4-6 hours I did something I haven't done in years.....

I didn't move off the couch and had a steady flow of my favorite snacks and trash tv right at my finger tips.  I proudly watched Maury and declared that I was indeed not the father of that baby! I strolled over to Jerry where a cheerleader referred to their love as the "spirit stick"...you couldn't put it down, and I finished off my day with a little Sex in the City where Carrie proclaimed her love for Big (aka John pst...did you know that was his real name??) all over again. It felt like 2002 and for the day I was  back in college, one word glorious!

Now I don't think I could do this everyday but today being at home sick wasn't so bad...here's to feeling better soon!

Happy Valentines Day!

Today is the official proclamation of love day---ok ok maybe I made that up, but today is Valentines today. So like it or not there will be plenty of roses, chocolate, love, and the emergency run to CVS today, it's a day like no other where LOVE is in the air. So what does the wedding planner and her boyfriend do on a day when love is to be celebrated?


We've managed to escape this crazy day by staying grounded and treat each other every day like its V- Day, and to be honest I wouldn't have it any other way.

Should I hire a Wedding Planner?


It seems like a simple question with a simple answer right? Our answer YES! We know there are a lot of facts and myths out there about Wedding Planners and in this post we are going to de-bunk em! Ok well maybe not all of them but the top 3.

Myth: Wedding Planners are too expensive…

Truth: Wedding Planners are an investment, but the price can be right if you have a realistic budget. What’s a realistic budget? Truth: Sorry to say, NO. You’ve invited your friend to your wedding as a guest and you want them to enjoy your wedding too right? On the day of your wedding someone that is in your wedding party and attending your wedding can’t be everywhere, but WE CAN.

What kind of coffee drinker are you? Dunkin Donuts vs. Starbucks

Remember back in the day when you gave no thought to where you’d go to get your coffee? Or even the kind of coffee you’d order? It was simple, medium regular, and it tasted just the way you liked it. Nowadays you read what seems like a novel of a menu and try to decipher between a latte, a cappuccino, an espresso, or even an “iced” coffee drink.

As soon as I moved to Massachusetts I quickly realized which fans I now lived near, Dunkin Donuts. Anywhere I went I was sure to see a “Dunks”, as the locals like to call it. I had to know what was up with their loyalty and again it was simple, dunks had remained the same since its opening. They’re in the business of coffee and that is that! Now to be fair and still true to those in the Starbucks camp I had to ask why they were so loyal (p.s. Phebe is totally in the Starbucks camp!). Their loyalty came from much more than the coffee it was the come and stay a while vibe you get after ordering from a barista.

So the ever growing debate continues. Which camp are you in?
